Introduction to Archaeology

Posted on 27 May 2015
The museum is organising an archaeology course on five consecutive Saturdays, starting on the 6 June, from 9.30 to 11.30am. The course tutor will be Dr Wendelin Morrison. Archaeology is the study of the material and physical remains of our human past. It is one of the widest ranging and most interdisciplinary of any profession or field of investigation, drawing its components from the physical, biological and social sciences as well as the arts, crafts, engineering and manual labour. This course will provide an introduction to archaeological history and practice, and how excavated materials are conserved and studied to inform us about our past; the development of archaeological methods and theories which helps us to discover, conceptualise and question how people lived and died in the past; and offer an insight into archaeology from across the globe, British archaeology and the nationally significant archaeology we are lucky enough to have in East Dorset, right here on our doorstep. The fifth Saturday will be an optional field trip to Knowlton Church, Rings and Barrow. Places on the courses are priced at £30 (£25 if booked by 30 May). Tea and coffee is included in the course cost. Tickets are available from Wimborne Tourist Information Centre or on 01202 886116. For further information please contact the museum.
