The Museum is holding two volunteer open days on Wednesday 27 May, 2.00 to 4.00, and Saturday 30 May, 11.00 to 1.00. The Museum has been a part of the High Street for over 50 years. Its collections are rich in social history and archaeology, telling the story of East Dorset. It offers learning opportunities for all ages, using the building and its collections as inspiration for fun, active and memorable activities. Founded in 1980 the Tourist Information Centre has been promoting East Dorset to hundreds of thousands of visitors over the years. The busy office is open year round providing a variety of services to visitors and locals alike. Advance tickets for a number of local events are available alongside seats to West End shows at the Mayflower Theatre and UK coach travel with National Express. The Centre holds a vast amount of information about things to see and do in the area, and also displays a selection of locally produced gifts and souvenirs. The Museum is a registered charity and relies on volunteer support to help deliver the exhibitions, events and programmes that it offers. They give more than 10,000 hours of their time each year. Volunteers' energy and enthusiasm is a real support to the Museum's and Tourist Information Centre's work, and every hour that is given is valued. The Museum and Tourist Information Centre always need new volunteers and are currently looking for extra help in several areas. The Garden Tea Room serves light refreshments and is popular with visitors. If you have experience of catering or are keen to learn, please get in touch. The Learning Service would like to hear from anyone interested in assisting the setting out of activity resources for schools, and providing support to the Learning Officer and learning assistants in the delivery of visits. The Tourist Information Centre is looking for volunteers to join their busy front of house team in helping with customer queries, booking tickets and encouraging sales. Computer literacy is vital and local knowledge preferable. The two open days are an opportunity to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, finding out about the work of the Museum and Tourist Information Centre, and meeting some of the people who work there.
