Second World War Stories

Posted on 17 Feb 2015
'Second World War Stories' is a new exhibition at the museum, opening on the 1 April and continuing until the 1 August. It will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the second world war. The exhibition draws upon the experiences of the local community at this time, using personal stories, objects and uniforms to tell its story. Displays will include examples of a camouflaged helmet, soldier's playing cards and tinned dried milk. East Dorset witnessed much wartime activity, from the Fire Watchers and Women's Land Army on the Home Front to the area's use in the build up to D-Day and the presence of unfamiliar faces, both allied troops and prisoners of war. Discover the day-to-day lives of local people as they 'kept calm and carried on' during a time of incredible hardship, and hear stories of their childhood adventures, work life and other encounters. The museum is also seeking objects and stories of people who were living in East Dorset at the time who left to fight overseas. Please contact the museum if you are able to help.
