Calling all budding archaeologists. The museum is the place to be for some archaeological family fun on Saturday 23 July, 10.00 to 4.30, as we celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. Have a go at making a coil pot or handle some real archaeological finds. Visitors will also be able to put on a hard hat and try their hand at our indoor archaeology dig. There will be something for everyone, with quizzes, trails and hands-on art and craft activities. Our Garden Tea Room will be open to serve light savoury snacks, delicious cakes, cream teas and drinks. Admission is £2.50 (FREE entry with a valid Young Archaeologists' Club membership card). The Festival of British Archaeology is organised by the Council for British Archaeology. Members of Dorset County Council's Historic Environment team will be at the museum on Tuesday 26 July, 10.30 to 1.00. Visitors can discuss their research and submit an Historic Environment Record enquiry in person, or show their finds to the Finds Liaison Officer (Portable Antiquities Scheme). It will give local volunteers, researchers and metal detectorists an opportunity to meet face-to-face, and to drop off and collect finds for identification. Visitors attending the morning session with the Finds Liaison Officer will gain free entry to the museum. If you would like any further information please contact the museum.
